I'm just one girl. What can I do?
Sam's cosy life as a daughter of the Deputy Prime Minister is about to end. These are turbulent times. Borders have closed and protests are turning violent. The government blames the country's youth, and is cracking down hard. Mobile phones are blocked, gatherings are banned and dissent is brutally crushed.
Sam is torn between family loyalty and doing what is right. When she meets Ava and Lucas her mind is made up.
One girl, one choice. She can make a difference: she must.
Even if her life- and her heart- are on the line...
My Review
Thoughts on the book: (MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS)
Fated is the prequel to the award winning Slated series by Teri Terry and is told in the dual point of views of Sam and Ava. Sam is the daughter of the Seputy Prime Minister and has lead a very cushy life and been shielded from a lot of what is happening in the outside world. But while being tutored by fellow student Ava, who happens to be in the complete opposite situation to Sam and knows what is happening in the outside world, she discovers just how in trouble their country is and how much influence her father has in what's happening. Sam and Ava strike up a friendship that quickly looks to become something more if only they could both admit their feelings. But when the youth of the country are made the target of everything that is going wrong in the country Ava suddenly realises she has to make a stand against her father and the government. But will Sam be able to make the difference she so wants to or will making this stand cost her her life?
A massive thank you to the amazing team at Hachette Australia for sending me a copy of Fated by Teri Terry to read and review. Now I have had Slated, the first book in this series, on my bookshelf for years but haven't gotten around to ever reading it so when I was offered a copy of Fated to read I jumped at the chance and what an exilarating read Fated was. It was action-packed, filled with such amazing writing and a fantastically driven plot that had me wanting to constantly keep reading to find out what happened to our dual point of view characters, Sam and Ava as well as the rest of the secondary characters and the youth of the novel. It was amazing seeing Sam go from this quite girl who has no interest in what happens in the world outside of her bubble to someone who fights for the rights of youth and defies her own father and the government who she has always stood behind. It was equally thrilling to see Ava, who had such a rough upbringing in the not so well off area go from a quite girl to becoming a strong woman who despite losing her father and her mother discovers so much about her past which makes her future that much more promising finally knowing who she is. I would have loved to have seen more of Sam and Ava together but that's the smallest critique I can give.
So if your wanting a fantastic dystopian book that is very much like what is happening in the real world, a love story that is an afterthought and characters that are defying the odds then Fated is the book for you. I know I will certainly be picking up the three books in the series as well as The Dark Matter trilogy.
