After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked King, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her, even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.

When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.

My Review
Thoughts on the book: The Wicked King is the second book in the Folk of the Air series by Holly Black which follows human Jude making her way in the world of Faerie. Jude has tricked Cardan into taking the crown and being the figure head for it while Jude does all the political side of it. Now she can't afford to show weakness at all especially hiding her feelings around Cardan. Jude fights to keep everything going smoothly and the way she wants it but it's hard when the King doesn't really want to be there and she seems to be fighting new enemies at every turn. When she is given some information that someone will betray her she doesn't take it to seriously but when she is taken hostage at her own sisters wedding she wonders if she will ever be safe in the land of Faerie. Will Cardan save her or let her rot in her prison? And if she returns how much will things change?

A massive thank you to Allen and Unwin for sending me an ARC of The Wicked King to read and review for them. I was so excited to recieve my copy of The Wicked King after waiting a whole year this sequel as Holly Black left us on quite the cliffhanger in book 1, The Cruel Prince. I didn't hold too high expectations for The Wicked King as The Cruel Prince took me a long time to get into and felt very slow until everything happened right at the end. The Wicked King was very different from its predecessor in the fact that the action started right from the get go and I was drawn in and held there until the very end and that ending OMG. The twists and turns that we are taken on in this book were often very unexpected and left you wondering how you didn't think in that direction before then. Jude and Cardan defiantly stepped up in my opinion and were clear favourites in the character front. Their will they or won't they relationship leaves you guessing right until the end and that ending certainly leaves you with the feeling of where their relationship is now. I never would have thought that The Wicked King would grip me the way it did and I'm hanging out for book 3 of the Folk of the Air series to see what happens next for Jude and Cardan. Hurry up Holly Black and give us some thing, anything about book 3. I'm dying here.
