What happens when the lights go off after what might truly be an end-of-the-world, apocalyptic event? How do you stay alive? Who do you trust? How much do you have to sacrifice?

Seventeen-year-old Pru Palmer lives with her twin sisters, grace and Blythe, and their father, Rick, on the outskirts of an isolated mining community. The Palmers are doomsday preppers. They have a bunker filled with non-perishable food and a year's worth of water. Each of the girls has a 'bug out bag', packed with water purification tablets, protein bars, paracord bracelets and epipens for Pru's anaphylaxis.

One day while Rick is at the mine, the power goes out. At the Palmer's house, and in the town. No one knows why. All communication is cut. It doesn't take long for everything to unravel. In town, supplies run out and people get desperate. The sisters decide to keep their bunker a secret. The world is different; the rules are different. Survival is everything, and family comes first.

My Review
Thoughts on book: After The Lights Go Out is the new novel from YA author Lili Wilkinson told through sevteen year old Pru Palmer's eyes. Pru and her family used to live in the city until her mother left and Pru's father moved Pru and her twin sisters, Grace and Blythe to the middle of nowhere. You see Pru's dad was a doomsday prepper and when they moved made a underground bunker filled with everything they could possibly need if anything happened. He was constantly making them do training runs to prepare for this and they each had a bag full of essential survival items to take with them. After their dad has gone to the mine for work suddenly the power goes out and doesn't come back on. Could this be the start of everything that their dad has trained them for? Will they be able to follow their dads plans or will they follow their hearts and make their own plans?

Thank you to Jess from Allen and Unwin for sending me a copy of After The Lights Go Out to read and review. I can't tell you how excited I was to receive this as it was on my buy Wishlist. I had seen so much positive publicity and praise around it that I immediately tucked into it when I recieved it. After The Lights Go Out has something for everyone in it; there is a mystery of what has happened, a new relationship in a time of disaster, a multiple surprising deaths, a community coming together in their time of need, some hard hitting topics of discussion, multiple twists and turns that you never saw coming and just a fantastically written story that will stay with you questioning what you would do if you found yourself in the same situation. Once I finished it I just wanted to find out what happened next although don't let that make you think that the ending wasn't tied up nice and neat because it was it was just some thing that I wanted to know. Congratulations on a fantastic book Lili Wilkinson and I can't wait to read some more by you.
